If you have lived in Florida for any time at all you know how dangerous it can be out there on the roads. These days there are more distracted drivers than ever before. Besides the distracted drivers there are Just plain bad drivers on the road. Keep in mind, if someone is careless behind the wheel, they are also likely to be careless when purchasing insurance for their vehicle. This is why it is so important to protect you and your family by purchasing the correct auto insurance coverage on your motor vehicle.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Insurance

Unlike other states, Florida law only requires an owner/driver to purchase no fault and property damage insurance. Florida law does not require motor vehicle owners to purchase bodily injury coverage. Bodily injury coverage will pay for injuries/sustained to a motorist when someone else’s negligence causes injuries. At my office we see it all the time: A client is injured due to the fault of another driver and will be forced to bring a claim for damages. The person that caused the accident does not have bodily injury coverage on their insurance policy. Everyone loses in this scenario. Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance fills this void.

Uninsured motorist will protect you when the person who caused the accident does not carry any bodily injury coverage on their vehicle. Underinsured motorist coverage will protect you if the person who caused the accident has low bodily injury limits on their coverage that will not cover all of your medical expenses and compensate you for your bodily injuries.

When you purchase uninsured/underinsured motorist (DM) coverage, your own policy will pay for your bodily injuries if the other driver is not insured. With so many uninsured/underinsured motorists on Florida roadways, this protection and the peace of mind that comes along with it is priceless. Call your insurance agent or your insurance carrier’s customer service number today and ask if you have (UM) uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage on your policy. If you do not have UM on your policy, ask how much it will cost to purchase this very important coverage. Uninsured motorist coverage is not an expensive coverage, and it is well worth every penny. Remember, no one plans to be involved in an auto accident.

Most people are not even aware of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage until after they have an accident, it is a fact that Florida has the most underinsured and uninsured motorists in the country. Some estimates put the total at around 26%. It is highly recommended that you carry underinsured motorist and uninsured motorist coverage on your own insurance policy. The extra coverage is relatively cheap and if you ever are forced to use it, you will be happy you made the right decision.
